The idea here was a sheath first, and some knife-centric tools, second.
Too much "survival" stuff, and you end up leaving the whole heavy mess in the truck, so you don't have it when you really need it. It's not always easy to tell when enough is enough, but I'm confident I got this right.
History confirms that conclusion, too: modern "survival sheaths" hold much of the same gear that Paleolithic people carried in their possibles bags.
The ESEE 5 seems about the right knife to center the kit around, so I'm moving on to the rest of it.
The BK 11 seems a good choice for a secondary knife, especially since it is the only factory knife that comes with a bottle opener.
But I would like to hear what others think would be good alternatives.
The Izula and Izula II do come to mind, but I wonder if there are other options.
Having watched this thread I'm half expecting a picture of a fully loaded 90 litre basckpack with a kydex sheath attached to the back! There! My knife sheath with storage pockets!
I'd love to see one for an Esee 4. I spend lots of time in the woods, when I'm not studying
Try Jungletraining.com. ESEE's forum. They have a FST where you could lurk, or I am certain that the members will be able to point you in the direction of somebody who can set you up with something custom.
There are already many examples of exactly what I was thinking of, here. Just look up "bushcraft sheath".
My original idea was to build a few of these and sell them (since I don't go out in the woods), but I believe that it's a very small, and well-served, market.
So I'm discarding any plans to profit from this idea.
Oh well. There's nothing really new in the world, right?
I might still build a kit for myself, someday, for kicks and giggles. But the main challenge for me is finding the perfect knife.
I know we have a couple people who have actually spent a night in the woods, on purpose. If you all want to continue to use this thread to build on the idea, feel free. I'll check back and see if anything interesting is going on.
It might help if as many people as possible hosted their avatar on their own computer. That way PB would not have to query other websites to refresh the SB.
Especially because Photobucket is really, really slow to load. I should know, I use it. It's not a big deal for me, but when Proboards has to query six accounts for avatars and sigs, it slows things down.
I host my boots on my own PC, but the current avatar is on PhB, I think.
I'll transfer it over, and if the rest of you are concerned with the SB lag, you should do the same.
The Shoutbox problems probably belong in the Forum Derpness Log.
That being said, I've had SB lag, as well.
Not knowing much about how this shit works won't stop me from making a guess.
We have all kinds of animated avatars, special sig lines, and shit, which is mostly on Proboards' servers. Any time somebody shouts, Proboards has to update that information, and send it out to all the users who are online.
That information may be so widely distributed on Proboards servers, that it takes a noticeable time to refresh, causing the lag.
Wireless appliances, like Netbook, would be correspondingly slower, since the information has to make the journey across an entire separate network that serves only wireless computers.
