I know that this is the minority view, but I find that cargo style pants/shorts are no better for EDCing than regular "5 pocket" jeans.
I own many pairs from 5.11. LAPG, Tru-Spec, and Uncle Sam. I have always found cargo pockets to be pretty useless. Anything more than a bandana in there and you are asking for trouble. Something substantial in a cargo pocket will swing like pendulum if you ever have to move in a hurry and something bulky gets in the way and bumps stuff. Perhaps worse of all, the forward facing rear pleat on many will catch and snag just about every cabinet pull you pass. I've ripped more than one pocket open that way.
That's why, for not the first time in public, I will declare the carpenter style pant the most useful pant for EDCing! Unlike cargos, its extra pockets are actually useful and contain/restrain their items in a manner that allows you to hustle through an intersection with some dignity. Plus, you can't overload them.
You can easily carry a substantial flashlight (P60 in my case) on one side and a full size MT in the other and go about your day as if you are carrying nothing.

I'm not real big on cargo pockets for the same reason you mentioned. All I wear is cargo pants, shorts. I used the cargo pockets for a buff, iPod Nano, and a zippo tape measure. I couldn't imagine having a whole EDC organizer in it.
What I love about cargo pants is the style of the main pockets. The low hung design. The tighter pockets and goofy design of jeans suck. The fifth pocket on jeans suck too.
I'd have to check out the main pockets for carpenter pants. If they have the same style as cargo pants I'm game.

i dont usually wear cargo PANTS, but cargo shorts i love.
I don't put anything heavy in the leg pockets, but a 1x cr123, or a 1 xaa light, my wallet, and a pack of gum. i have no swinging problem with that stuff......and iave never snagged or ripped a pocket
my only complaint is the way all cargo shorts hip pockets are angled..... like / instead of __ , i much prefer attaching a knife to a pocket with a lip like ___ , and stuff falls out of the / pocket a lot easier when sitting.
I like the pocket configuration on carpenter style pants but i have yet to find a pair that i doesnt look.........cheap? fits weird? i dont know. im sure theres decent look ones out there but every time i find a pair of carpenter pants somewhere and try them on, they always look like crap......like some walmart pants my dad would wear
maybe someone could point me to a brand that makes cargo stuff that doesnt look like old man clothes or cheap walmart crap? because i would buy them

/ trumps __ for me every time. Nothing falls out for me, and the M11R clip is pretty loose. On occasion a lighter will fall out, but I have to be laying down for that to happen.

Fristads-kansas? I dunno if you can get them over in the states... They make a bunch of "casual" carpenters/electricians pants ;) As for quality, my granddad has a few pairs overalls that are older than me :p

the other reason tend to like regular jean pockets like ___ is that i can a small light and a knife in the same pocket
and of course jean pockets usuall hold up better.....my cargo shorts always get shredding by my knives quick

I must have thought about ordering those Fire Hose pant 1000x's. I just can't do it. I think they'll be heavy or some stupid ripstop variant.

I'm wearing my fire hose pants today. I have the carpenter variant with the little tool pocket on the right thigh and a semi-useful (read: no pleats, fairly flush pocket) cargo pocket on the left. I never use the cargo, but the tool pocket is perfect for my KSF/Wave/Light combo.
They are heavy. They breathe about as well as jeans. They are extremely durable. I wouldn't recommend going for a long walk or wearing them outside for too long on a hot summer day, but I wear them pretty regularly here in south Alabama all year and I'm yet to pass out from heat exhaustion. They wear remarkably similar to jeans, but seem more durable.

Awesome info. Worth it then?

Haha, I remember Cone did a post about this once before. What he doesn't know is that it got me hooked on Corner Gas & that I'm already halfway through season 5 since then :cray:
I think people need to see that video here too, TH(C). I'd post it myself, but I don't remember which episode it was..
I think so, yeah. I don't do particularly laborious work outside, or inside for that matter, but I like them. They wear well and hold my stuff where I need it. The pockets are a useful size and placement. The crotch gusset is pretty nice too. I have a pair of their ballroom jeans that I really like too.

HAHAHA! The really funny thing is that Gibbsrule is the one who turned me on to Corner Gas in the first place, so you can't blame me. Man I love that show.
Now, if I can only figure out how to post that video...
