The question is pretty simple, would you buy a Chinese knockoff Sebenza/Strider/whatever instead of the real deal? Why? Why not? Personally every time I'd hold that thing I'd think about how it's fake and it would eat my nerves. If you can't afford the real deal, just save up for it... I don't give a shit about American workforce/integrity/saving USA jobs and all that other Obama shit, I'm just saying, don't support people who steal others' designs.
Discuss plz.
Also I won't judge you for buying anything - unless it's a R.U.T.

I bought a fake Strider as a model for a project. Overall it looked good to me, but I never really considered owning/using it.
Personally, I'd say fuck that shit and buy something I could afford. If I had to have a Strider, I'd save and buy a Strider.
All that said, I don't give a fuck what anyone else does. Of course if China started making cheap Villains, I'd hate them and anyone who bought them.

I'd buy other knockoff items from companies idc about. In fact, I'm getting a tad op1 knockoff because I've heard it's a great deal and quality on par for nearly 1/10th the cost. Now that I'm not a cove member anymore, it's gona be virtually impossible to get the real deal...not like I have the 150 to spend on an admin pouch anyway
However, while it may not be right to copy the design, I'm not a loyal follower of either brand, the copy isn't labeled as the real deal...and generally it comes down to "you get what you pay for", so the buyer is getting screwed the most.
And you'll have to deal with shit talking and hate.
These tactical companies never re-release high demand products generally, so really they leave the buyer no choice often times.

"I'm waiting for Digiorno to cook. Three meat, stuffed crust. It's not delivery, but no place delivers here. So. "
Also, if the clone maker is just as reputable and selling for a higher cost and really making a profit, that's the worst case scenario. Not some no name making a few pennies and never getting the rep from those who already have a voice in the communities.

Knives, that's kinda dumb...risking shifty pivots, stripped screws, crappy lockup, off center mystery steel that sharpens about as well as a fingernail

Obviously, I don't feel too wrong about it, because I did buy one.
I've been trying to sort out exactly how I feel, and it comes down to this:
I would not buy a copy if I felt that the authentic article is reasonably priced.
I would not feel bad about buying a copy if much of the cost of the original is simply the "halo effect" of the name in the trademark.
I know what it costs to purchase materials, and what it costs to heat treat, so the real variable is how much the maker thinks his time is worth. This is hard to figure out, especially if the maker sources some of the parts.
In many cases, the cost of materials and heat treat works out to right around one hundred dollars.
I'll leave it to you to decide how much you think a custom maker's time is worth, and spend your money accordingly.

not into knives really, but if there was a knife that I liked and I could get a copy for half the price and its just as good - sure. Just because something is a knock-off doesnt mean its any less quality. China makes a lot of great stuff (check out your iphone, laptop, tv etc), and they make some crap too, dont lump it all together in the 'crap' folder just cause it says "hecho en china"
For me it is a political decision . Where possible I prefer not to buy anything that's made in China because of the governments human rights abuses, the poor pay they give, the bad working conditions, the intellectual property theft, there aggressive, backward politics. Having said all that I own Chinese things. I like my Fenix, its almost impossible to buy an affordable good flashlight that isn't made in China (you may tell me some but I'm real cheap). I prefer YKK zips, never found anything match them. My electronics are may be Chinese. The components of things maybe. I don't obsess, merely prefer. What was the question? Oh, yeah, knives, I don't love expensive knives enough to go out of my way to buy a fake/clone. I'd love a Becker BK2 but that's because of its physical attributes, which a cheap copy would not have (probably), plus I may be able to afford sometime.
TL;DR I prefer not to buy from countries with bad human rights records, but if it can't be helped I don't obsess about it. I wouldn't buy a clone knife because I dont know enough about knives to know if the quality was lower than I wanted.

When it comes to knives, I won't knowingly buy one. It'd irk me every time I held it and attempted to use it. What if it broke during use? What if it fell apart? I'd keep asking myself that shit. HOWEVER, when it comes to edc gear like a prybar or bottle opener, I'd definitely buy knockoff. It's usually heat treated stainless steel. It's usually the same size, if not a bit bigger. It's usually pretty fucking cheap! So why not buy a knockoff carabiner or prybar or bottle opener? I see no difference other than one being Ti and one being SS. Big fuckin whoop.
Sure why not. In fact I think I have one or two somewhere. If you can't afford the genuine item because of insane mark ups... Buy a knife to use, if it breaks you're down what? $20? Ok, the real thing might not break so easily (I would hope) but take stock of your needs and buy accordingly.
I don't like ones that replicate trademarks or names though, there's too much "Timmy Holefinger" shite in the world.
And if you do buy the real thing, use it! It offends me more that someone would pay so much for such a simple tool, and never use it or stick it in a safe and never see it.
Of course, I'd love a Rockstead Higo, but I'd never spend that much on a tool because (apart from not having the money) I would become the person I hate with a knife in a safe that never gets used.

I have purchased 3 "knock off's" from China in the last couple of weeks. Cost is a major consideration as they are a fraction of the real thing, sometimes as much as a tenth of the cost. Being in the UK is also a consideration as there are very few if any UK retailers who sell the really top end blades and the American manufactures and retailers will not mail out to the UK amyway. The really cheap one I have is a Medford Praetorian Clone which I will straight up say is "cheap" quality with a very sloppy pivot hole but for less than £20/$25 it goes into the work bag. The other two cost around the $90 mark and are for the money very good products. I spent a couple of hours with my Lansky stones on one of them yesterday and it takes a very good edge (I'm a carpenter & joiner so know what sharp is) so it will be interesting to see how it performs and lasts. I guess the main question is for a knife is how the blade holds up, I can't answer this yet. But I am pleasantly surprised with the overall quality. I agree with the shelf queen thing too, I want to use the stuff I buy and a $600 blade just wouldn't get used.
