My mandrel rod is 1/4". I think it would be easiest to turn the bead using the rod. Use the metal pieces from you as a bushing to get to size. Square up the ends that will be epoxied to the wood and it will be sexy.

Chong, danish oil would look good on the beads. I use boiled linseed oil as part of my finish on the pens. Alternate it with CA glue to make a slightly more durable finish.
