This is here so I know where to find it, so I can think out loud (because there is a lot of noise inside my head), and to see what others think.
Well, I already know what most of you think. We even have an emoticon for it.
I'm pretty happy with this little collection of pocket tools:
They do the things I feel I need them to do, without being so expensive that I'm afraid to carry and use them.
It takes me a while to get to something I like, mainly because I can find some fault with nearly everything. But I haven't felt the need to change this collection of tools for over a year now, and that tells me what I need to know.
What I'm not happy with is the time it takes to stow everything. This is the price I pay to keep my junk secure, but if I can find a faster, easier way to do the same, you bet I will.
Which is what this thread is about.
I started with the idea of something like a "bushcraft sheath", with it's various pockets, so that all I have to do is grab one piece of kit, and clip it to something, to have all my gear in one place. But that's all the further I've got with the idea.
Skinth is an inspired idea, and one possible way to go would be something like a Skinth, with an integrated kydex sheath for the knife.
I stacked my shit up to get an idea of how it all might pack into a "Skinth-ish" sheath, and this was one idea I had.
Here's a three-quarter, bottom, view.
Obviously, it's necessary to imagine the pockets which surround these items. If you do so, imagine them being khaki canvas, with leather accents. Yeah.
It's bulky, though. Even set up for horizontal carry, there is no way to hide all that. I don't have a problem with it printing, since the knife is at the back on purpose, to hide behind the other gear.
What I do have a problem with is things sticking out from my waist. So I will have to fiddle with the stacking order, maybe even split it into two parts, to see if I can come up with something that's lower profile.
The stuff on the left is used less often, and could be shuffled around a little, to make a flatter, wider package that could go in a belt sheath or clip inside a pocket. I have to think about that one, because my wallet is already in the LFP.
The stuff on the right is what I use most often. The nail clippers could be left to rattle around loose in the bottom of my pocket, while the knife, light, and Chapstick are stuck in their containers. The light and lip balm being almost the same size, it could even be one long pocket, instead of two.
Well, that's enough mental masturbation on my part, for now. Youse can have your turn to tell me how stupid the whole idea is.
Whatever I do has to fill a long list of requirements, including:
Be as low-bulk as is absolutely possible
Hold all the stuff securely
Make it easy to access.
The second two are pretty easy, but they get in the way of the first one. The process of getting something right will be the same as the process of assembling the kit in the first place: try things, figure out what works, let it evolve. It takes time.
