SHTF, and you are stuck with only what is on your person. No BOB or cache to go to. Make a mental dump of everything you have. What items would be a benefit to you, hindrance?
Items on me Clothes - khaki slacks, button down short sleeve shirt, white undershirt, underwear, socks Shoes - no lace slide on shoes with a decent sole Wallet - some cash, credit cards, ID, silver dime Phone - iphone with 99% charge Car keys and house keys - on a multi purpose dangler that also has a small SOG fusion knife Bullet space pen Zippo that was filled yesterday SAK - Pioneer Maratac AAA flashlight Small amount of change Silver american eagle coin - 1oz .999 silver Citizen Eco-drive chrono watch Wedding band - 9g 14k white gold ID lanyard with pilot g2 pen Glasses
The shoes are good enough that I could walk half a day without issue. Cell phone could be used to call unless no signal or loss of grid. I have enough cash to pay a taxi or buy a small amount of provisions. If need be, coins can be sold for scrap value as can ring.
Missing items that I would want - coat or long sleeve shirt if the weather changed or I was forced to stay overnight. I have no container for water. Might be nice to have some paracord. Urban disaster I think I'd be ok - short term, biggest thing is can I get away from area. Rural disaster - no food or water but I do have some tools. Exposure would be biggest issue - maybe I'd be ok for 36 hours or so. Hopefully I can find help or get rescued before then. More than 36 hours would require me getting creative and focusing on finding food.
To be honest, the thing that would help me the most would be my flashlight. SHTF situations are hard to imagine but in my surroundings there wouldn't be too much use for a knife, although I'd keep two on me at all times anyways. A good flashlight with accessible batteries (AA or AAA here) would be irreplaceable, because 99% of people I know don't carry one

I was watching some guy on YT talking about SHTF scenarios, and he had the audacity to tell thousands of people that a flashlight is useless for bugging out and SHTF. First of all-try telling that to ANYONE in any of our communities, and also all the preppers on YT.
Maybe he's right-if you have night vision goggles or for some reason are Amish ...but you can't expect to always have a fire lit for torches (security reasons) and if you've gotta run through a dark area-good luck if you don't have a flashlight!
Yeah-here's the alternative...train to do everything like Zatoichi did (blind-though he had no choice). Carry around multiple flares at all time. Only walk five feet from a given point at any time. Die. That's about it
I agree with you-a light is vital in almost any type of situation where natural/powered lights are insufficient. For people who only care about knives and not lights or say that knives are more useful: A knife won't do you any good in the dark unless____________*. Me and Q had a fun time filling in the blanks
Which also brings me to the next point-rechargeable batteries with rechargers. There will always be some kind of power source that can be used/created for lights-but that doesn't mean you can just have the flourescents/incandescents/tungstens running indoors at all times, esp. with limited cap solar chargers or limited gas (generators). It'll be one of the most useful. And IF-for some reason you don't have a light, there are secondary, much less reliable, more temporary (and more dangerous) means of creating light.

"I'm waiting for Digiorno to cook. Three meat, stuffed crust. It's not delivery, but no place delivers here. So. "
1) Nitecore i4 charger 2) CR123 rechargeables 3) Extra empty nylon/plastic pouches 4) Blackhawk Training Jacket
I think that's everything ...It won't sustain me for any real length of time, but it's what I have daily. I learned that just having the bag alone is extremely useful.
Think of it as a personal storage locker for important finds and when you have to hole up with other people outside of your permanent dwelling.

If this is what we carry daily on us, then, I usually have just one key, knife of choice that day, couple copper Zombucks for fiddle factor, IDs, cards, couple pens, work wallet with minimum $40, and my phone. Shirt, undershirt, shorts, khakis, 6" work boots, belt with phone case and my ball cap. I usually wear a leather motorcycle jacket to work with me so I have that, the helmet and I wear a pair of safety glasses for night riding as the helmet has a smoke windshield and they are not allowed for night riding here.
Days I carry my TT ROP backpack include a FAK, iPad mini, couple more pens, usually a fixed blade, MT, Zippo with butane insert, and small amount of cord. Not too worried about food should a SHTF happen while at work as I drive a truck full of frozen food around all day. Steaks, chops, fish, veggies, breads, and ice cream. The freezer units and insulation on these trucks will keep the food below 0 for upwards of 36 hours. Below freezing for probably another 24 hours without electricity. Longer than that, I start bartering the thawing food for canned foods.
Corny - do you always wear your bags? In the event of a disaster, you may be evacuated to another area for safety. You might only have what is on your person. Think 9/11 or something as minor as a building fire while you're shopping. If you have no time to get to a bag, or you didn't bring it with you due to the building you were in - what then? You go over a friend / family members house and the minor storm that was passing thru turns into a super cell that dumps 3 inches of hail and caused the trees to topple, cutting power and blocking all local roads. You get into a car accident on a country road and as the car catches fire you drag yourself from the wreck - you seem to be ok but the sun is setting so the billowing smoke isn't seen by anyone.
I like to ponder the what if, so if things go wrong in life I at least have an idea of what I could do.

Can confirm, Corny brings at least a bag with him when he goes out.

wjruth -I take my bag shopping, to work, and even on a minute drive to the post box. I know I don't need to and probably wont use it most of the time, but I make it a point to have it anyway.
Also, I know that if I carry anything thats just slightly too large for a week, it wont get carried, so my packs are extremely minimal now. Perfection-so I want to carry it-very important.

The stuff on my person varies depending on time of day. If I'm at work, I have my light, gloves, Gerber MT, and steel toed boots. I'd like to think I could make it to my bag which has plenty, but playing by the rules I'll leave that out.
At home I carry the good stuff. All day. Every day. Routine. Techno - strong enough Barlow - damn fine Watch - compass and baro for weather (though I find my eyes work better for prediction wet weather) I need a compass because I would be lost. Light - CR123 and AAA and Nano on the neck. I'm covered for a while. Buff - because hankies are for snot. Skeletool - I really need to dump this Skinth so I can carry my Spydiewrench. Measuring Tape and D20 - just in case I run into some hot babes that want to play DND or Warhammer. Merrells - because I'm old and don't care how stylish my feet look. And they have good traction so I can outrun the fat Mexican in Vans. Notepad and Pen - So if I come up with a bead idea while watching the sky fall around me, I'm ready.
That said, I do think I should add a poncho or lightweight windbreaker to the bag. I do carry socks, underwear, and a toothbrush with paste and floss though. So if I can get to my bag, I'll have a fresh mouth for the hot nerd babes.
I carry no first aid. I might stick a few bandaids in my note book cover now. I do carry pills on me. Not enough to kill myself, but I'll get a good nights sleep. Might be able to trade a couple for some beer too.
I never really got into EDC for emergencies. I think that developed over time, but I'm still too disorganized and out of fucks to do it right. I keep meaning to build a BOB, but I don't.

In the past several years I have been witness to severe incidents (hail, tornados, blizzards, gas main explosions, sink holes, fires, multi vehicle accidents) It makes you think

I'm going to get a windbreaker. Corny wants me to buy a TAD knock off so I can tell him it's awesome so he'll get one. I'm thinking something cheap and light. I started a thread.
I don't have a water bottle either. We're going to die.

I do carry a bag almost always (when Im on the clock I dont have a bag on me, but small bag in my locker, or my bookbag at school etc), but I'll keep it to pockets only since that seems to be what the OP wanted
shoes - Saucony Jazz shoes; they are comfy and have had no issues walking and/or standing in them for hours at a time bottoms - some khaki shorts top - tee with a short sleeved button-up over it on top - Ray Ban New Wayfarer glasses (well, they're currently hanging on the pocket of the Vans button-up
In my pockets: wallet - have my debit card, school id, drivers license, CCW permit, and 20 cash front right pocket - some loose bills, a plastic comb, some chapstick, the ESEE knife I just picked up (zan...something,I dont know the dang name) left front pocket - Leatherman Skeletool CX (swap between this and the Wave, depends on what Im wearing, if I want the extra weight or not) Left rear pocket - cell phone clipped to belt loop - car key(has remote opening etc built in), Fenix E05, and Leatherman Brewzer. All on a 'biner ALSO clipped to belt loop - another biner with my first prototype prybar
So I got some cash, its sunny so Im not going to worry about sun in my eyes, comfy clothes, a light when it gets dark and then whatever I can use the MT for. AND I'll be able to stay looking good with my comb. Which is the biggest priority in ANY disaster.
