Even a moderate sized forum needs a dedicated host. Something like 300 bucks a month. A XenForo license is 140. vBulletin is 250. Everything else is cheap, I think.
XenForo is cheaper than vBulletin? That surprises me a little.
:( I like your blue stars, Maxie.
I think vBulletin has more features. And there are other charges to XenForo, like 250 to remove branding.

$300 bucks is going to be too much for this group. We'd need a moderately sized support group for that. What about selling advertising or something?

Google AdSense is free and is fairly straight forward. I think thats the easiest way to start. Not sure if we're allowed to do that here on the free one though.
When I'm within the friendly confines of EDCPeople, if I type the key combination Alt-D (to go to the address bar of the browser), I get a pop-up navigation menu to these forums in the upper left corner of the screen. Now, I know what you're saying, "Grids7, why go to the address bar to navigate *outside* the friendly confines of the forum?" Ummm, no good answer, I guess. ;-)

That's a good tip!

"I'm waiting for Digiorno to cook. Three meat, stuffed crust. It's not delivery, but no place delivers here. So. "
I agree about the forum badgering. It got old. So did the shilling posts (posts about shilling being bad, not necessarily the shills themselves) and the Craftsman difficulty. You keep a store out of it, and those nuisances go away. If people want to do stickers or patches or whatever, we/they can start a group buy with pre-orders or something. I think it can be handled simply.
Regarding the gear and comparisons with USN and EDCF, I think that's why I think of USN as high end. It does put off people who think they can't contribute because of their gear worth. While I've never seen a negative post of less-expensive gear, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some elitism regardless. The same way with people who think a certain amount is too much to spend on gear. Personally for me I prefer individuality. Like Hatchetjack mods, Cornmailz, Mooshbots, or even unusual colors of paracord or jewelry. USN, while great in some regards looks like the same pic all the time. A lot of the people I've interacted with lately have been great. Early on though, I felt beat up a little.
1)I would suggest finding out what we need to do to be a real forum. 2)If it costs money, how much? How often? 3)Is big brother going to be watching...controlling? 4)What do we need to do to have this place or A place pop up in the search the same as EDCF?
We will have an advantage of attracting members over EDCF because there will be no store or pushers, so we should be able to maintain a comfortable, fun environment. If they find a place were GAW's are encouraged and BST is free and while still related to EDC, it's not oppressive like EDCF has become.
I totally feel the same way with everything you guys said above.
1)Yeah, I'm still in the process with the mods/admin covering all that. We've looked into changing forum hosts and layouts completely.
2)It depends-while I think this forum would be a good choice for everything to just remain free, I believe this forum has it's drawbacks capability wise. Other forums hosting sites have much more capability and allows modification and adding/deleting of features. I feel pretty comfortable here, and it's pretty simple to change the layout-just gotta find out what's best for the people.
3)Big brother-meaning the forum host? As far as I've seen, they've only controlled videos, and that's more than likely because people have submitted complaints. You can sign up for a different hosting site that allows adult videos, but I'd rather not take freedom that far. If we were JerzeeDevil w/ everyone's pic as a nude chick and no women there I probably wouldn't care.
4)Basically, we'll just have to buy a domain, and Idk how much it costs right now. I think it's cheap, but have to do a little more research.

Yeah, we'll have to look into the whole bst thing. There does have to be some rules and some delayed gratification or incentive.
I agree with moosh for the post count idea-it makes sense that you should have at least some kind of reputation or involvement here so that you're not thinking about screwing someone over that easy.
And with a Craftsman badge, it should cost something for members who demand to sell here, but may not even make products and just take whatever money they get in advance and run. That would be too easy. Until we start adding from the outside world, there's no damn reason why we should charge. WillyD-you're the only person who sells here, and we all trust you. So basically you just keep showin stuff off and selling to those people you love most, and we'll figure out all the little details later.

I agree with what you're saying. What about, in conjunction with post-count, a calendar time duration, say two weeks or something? Post count is pretty good, but if all someone is doing is posting "That's cool!" posts, that may not accomplish what you're aiming for.
jk! Yeah, that would be a good idea...that's somewhat like a trial member thing...but 20 posts is nothing, and neither is two weeks. I'd make it like 200 posts

A crook is a crook. I've seen plenty of bad deals with established members. It can happen at anytime. Know the risks. I'm all for doing something, but I don't think we need to get carried away.
Regarding my sales, I think for the most part there will be no sales here. You all know me already and the majority of you have a bead or two. I'm using this place as a placeholder and if we do make it to the outside world, you bet I'll be paying.
