Because I want to build a sheath that includes the basic kit you would want when going out into the woods.
Eventually.
For now, I'm just gathering ideas about what should go into it, and there are people who go out into the woods a lot more than I do.
My list includes:
6-8" blade knife
3" blade knife
Firesteel
Sharpening stone or diamond block
I want to know if there is anything else you think should be there, as well as feedback on the existing items.
Should the big knife should be larger?
What do you think of the option of a small hatchet instead?
What brand/kind of fire steel?
What grit should the sharpening tool be?
As you can see, I don't know much about this.
As you can also see, the items themselves would be mostly off the shelf. I want them to be good, but I don't see a need to go full custom for everything.

Fuck a hatchet. The knife will be heavy enough.
Firesteels in general suck. You'd want to include some type of quick start like cotton balls or lint balls.
I don't see a bottle opener?

Make a pouch for a small sharpening stone, a zippo, and maybe like a little squirt multitool. You should do a kydex sheath with a leather attachment system.

The fire starter will come with a striker (metal scraper) or you can use the back of the knife. You have to direct the sparks. You need it to hit something dry and that will catch immediately. The longer the striker the better. These tiny short ones are a bitch. Long ones risk breaking so it's a trade off. I'd carry a back up Bic.

I'd also think the sharpening stone should be very coarse and medium. Like axe/hatchet sharpening pucks. We aren't whittling hair, we're chopping shit up. You'll need to correct damage from rocks and that will require some aggressive grit.

Thanks for the link, AJ. That's pretty much the kind of thing I'm talking about.
Materials choice is something I was going to leave for later, but in light of this, may as well bring it up now.
This is the sheath:
And it is awesome, but it is made out of leather, which does not like to get wet.
How do you'se feel about the differences between kydex, cordura, and leather, for durability and so on. Or, to add more confusion, what about some combination of materials?

I think that sheath uses a kydex insert. I prefer the leather personally. I've seen some kydex versions and they're okay, but I think leather beats them all for taking a beating. I can't see it being an issue with the leather getting wet.

Gerbers LMF II has the right idea. Should have enough room on the drop leg for an extra sheath. Grab a Wave or Supertool, even a MUT. Maybe the sheath should be a skinth.
You could do a regular kydex sheath and then superglue leather with all pouches etc stitched in. That way you have the stability of the kydex body but the easiness of sowing on the pouches and snaps on the leather.

I'm attracted to those types of sheaths, but I can't help but think they are heavy. I think I would prefer a Kydex with add-ons. I think ESEE has a modular sheath system. Kydex and nylon.
