centralia is great, i go at least twice a year. we ride our quads there because no one cares and the cops dont mind. as long as you stay off of the peoples property that still live there, which is like 5 houses left. i couldnt live there. the residents have canaries as pets because of the heavy carbon monoxide in the air i also found a time capsule that is supposed to be opened in the year 2016
The Wikipedia entry is much longer. I forgot about Silent Hill.
It's just that there isn't much in the entire middle of Pennsylvania that gets much notice outside the state. We've got Philly, Hershey, Penn State, Pittsburgh, and coal. That's about it. Most people think of PA as a lot of trees that you drive through or fly over on you way to the beach or New York.
PA is also known for its steel plants (Pittsburg & Bethlehem) which supplied most of the steel during WW1 and WW2
During World War II, as much as 70 percent of airplane cylinder forgings, one-quarter of the armor plate for warships, and one-third of the big cannon forgings for the U.S armed forces were turned out by Bethlehem Steel. plus they produced something like 1,200 ships. my home town and i love it. heres my fav pic i took while out wandering with my bfff
I'd love to visit Centralia. I love urban decay. I think it's beautiful.
When I have to go back to Fort Dix, New Jersey next year for 4 weeks of training with the Army, I'm going to go back to PA. I went to Philly a couple of years ago when I went to Fort Dix, and just saw all the obvious patriotic sites. Next year I'm looking for more unique stuff. I was thinking of checking out Eastern State Penitentiary.
I wish I knew more about the area, though. I'd rather explore some stuff instead of going to museums. As much as I love museums. I'm pretty geeky about that stuff.
you're talkin' to the right chick then! you let me know when you will be there and i will hook you up with an itinerary that you can pick & choose from. i've been into the weird NJ and weird PA books/mags and what not since i turned 16 and could drive. thats all i would do, so much fun! went to crystal lake (super hard to find, they've changed the names a couple times) roadside america in pa- lame byberry mental hospital- now torn down =( eastern state pennitentiary is really fun during halloween! but you can also do day trips where they just let you walk around on your own. there is one museum you must check out if you go to the pennitentiary because its close by, the mutter museum....its got the worlds largest human colon i could go on......but i will save it for your itinerary
also been to fort dix a couple of times, thats where my hubby was before and after his tour
