Since I am working miles from a microwave and winter is in full force, I need some ideas for a small, backpack stove. I hate cold soup. I have an alcohol stove, but was thinking of wood fueled since I am cutting down trees and have access to dry firewood for free all day. Need it to be able to sit my GSI steel cup or a Stanley cook pot on top or inside.
I would like to be able to heat up soup, boil water for ramen, or maybe make some beans and rice while at work. I'd pull out the big Coleman two burner dual fuel stove, but, when the crew sees it come out, they think its time to stop working. And, since I try to eat before I pull that out for their lunches, a small stove would be preferred. Besides, they need to stay working until I call "Lunch you bastards!!" Is it wrong to ask them to work for 4 hours a day? 45 minute lunch, 3 hour round trip commute to and from job site, 15 minute bathroom break on the way to or from the jobsite.
I think I have seen pics here, but it could have been another site.

Considered an Esbit? I know there are fuel tabs for it, but Im sure you could put some small pieces of wood (SMALL) in it and it'd work too. Might be worth a try, they are quite cheap
I have an Esbit and can get tablets locally. Not sure it would burn wood and my cup doesn't fit on it. The one I have is the old, square, folding one you could find at most army surplus stores twenty years ago. Yes, it's that old.
I've tried to make a hobo stove from a soup can, but I am doing something wrong and they never work right.

Yep, thats the kind I meant. I have bought, about a year or so ago, a new one with fuel tabs for 8 bucks. They are inexpensive. But, as you said, if you cant fit your cup on it then it wont do you a lick of good.
I was thinking of something like this when I made my recommendation
If I had a GI canteen cup, the Esbit would work perfectly. I've thought about getting one with a lid, just haven't had a chance to stop at a local army surplus or look online. I like the GSI mug and Nalgene combo.
I am going to see what I can make for a pot stand for my little Choke Hazard alcohol stove and see how it works. Or, make a new stove with an integrated pot stand. I've been looking at some new stove ideas and have found another one I like.
