I like the pouch. Been used in several different packs. Not fond of it attached to the outside of the pack as it makes the pack too fat. But, adds a great deal of organization to a pack that lack organization. Or, just adds more organization to a pack has that already has good organization.
The TT ROP has no organization and neither does my Tasmanian Tiger Essential. The FR-1 was used in both. Max has the ROP now and we were talking about organization pouches so I took these pics for him. But, am looking at getting a Rush 12 for EDC as the Essential is a bit small. Has a ton of webbing for attaching pouches, but, I don't like the look of a ton of external pouches. Have considered a Maxped 10x4 for a water bottle on the outside, though.

Sorry they haven't been working out...keep the essential though-great for running outta the house last minute.
I gotta say dude, that the tarainsert from HPG works WONDERS. That way you can attach either molle or velcro pouches and have it all standing in the pack. No fussing about pulling pouches and digging through. It's worth the investment.
Be forewarned-the 511 is very nice, and all the organization you'll need-but because of that, it is heavy even empty. I liked the "toss in" style cause it felt very special ops . Also, I used to look at the survival forums and outdoorsy forums for pack info rather than edcf with all the molle fancy-schmancy goods.
The thing is, nowadays I just wana look as plain as possible. I won't put extra on the outside mostly because I don't want to add to the profile. If you don't need molle, Swissgear is actually great. Otherwise, Maxped and 511 are fine. Heavy, but fine. Try to look for 500D instead of 1000D

Still love the Essential. Won't be parting ways with it anytime soon. I'll look into the insert, may be what I need. The reason I am looking at a ROP again or the Rush 12 is size. Need to carry a couple Nalgenes with me daily since most of the work I do is miles from anything. Essential I can get my 32 oz Nalgene and the FR-1 with a couple sammiches. Want a little more room for water and maybe a bag of chips or a hoodie for cooler days.

Didn't you get a HPG pack, Corny?
Oic...Yeah I love my hpg but those are meant for separate internal organization or vertical organization. Many backpackers go with the clamshell or vertical opening-even spec ops guys-that's why they love the trizip. My Tara is for hiking. My bfg pack has double sided velcro, and is badass-so it's my edc pack. I just open it and have everything just along the front and back...apparently blue force gear is coming out with another micro pack.
Military guys love the old bfg packs because of their versatility and options.

I kind of like the vertical zipper idea. Get some pouches to organize the interior and it might make a great bag for what I'm doing.
According to the numbers, the Tara is almost twice the size of the Essential. That seem about right? Since you have had both.
Running inmates I don't get a regular lunch, I have to stay close to supervise them all day. So, room for a coupe sandwiches and some snacks for the 10 hour day is nice. Have a cooler I keep in my truck and toss lunch in it when I get to work. Would really like to be able to toss in two 32 oz Nalgenes inside the pack for water. I keep a 12 pack of bottled water in my truck usually, as well. Some jobs we are a mile or more from the truck though and would like to have water and snacks in the bag with me.

The tara has great bottle carriers on the outside...on the inside you'll be limited with two bottles in there...I would say it probably comfortable fits 2 folded m/l size sweaters. That's why you need to get used to the organization. I also have a kifaru pod on the bottom, which is amazing.

Forgot about the Kifaru stuff. Wonder how a long pocket would look on the Essential?
So, with the Tara, you use the tarainsert and organize on it? Then use a Kifaru pod on the bottom for more room? Sounds interesting. Any pics handy? Would love to see the layout.
