I was wondering what you guys thought of the CRKT Otanashi Noh Ken as a strictly self defense folder and then carry another knife altogether or multitool to do all the other stuff? Is that too mall ninjaish?

I would say try to do anything besides using a knife. If you can avoid nearly or successfully killing a guy, avoid it. I used to be freakin paranoid but it's something I don't want to ever think about. I'd rather jab with a pen than kill a dude or have a group of dudes looking to kill me.
Either a gun, or nothing. If you're gona do the job, do it right I mean-if you're gona defend yourself, use lethal force...I mean-if you're gona....nvm.

As a trucker I am quite limited in what I can carry. Even the crkt would be illegal for me cause of the blade length. Kinda not fair if you know whut I mean?
The Otanashi, like much of James Williams' designs for CRKT, is intended to fulfill an SD role, if necessary, although it's emphasis is on cutting, rather than stabbing.
I would guess the intention is to end the fight by cutting an essential muscle, such as the Deltoid or Biceps, which makes it impossible to use your arm.
Similarly, a deep slash to the Rectus Femoris, or Vastus Lateralis, muscles in the leg, will make it difficult to continue the fight, regardless of the target's pain tolerance. Those muscles are part of the essential hardware of lifting and flexing the legs and arms, and if they are damaged enough, there is nothing your target can do.
I've seen plenty of threads like this in SD forums, and it is about now that things start to go off the rails. Around here, we expect that, but if you read the whole thread, you can end up like this:
So let me try to pre-empt the discussion about legality and of effectiveness knives for SD.
There are so many variables in a "fight", that it is impossible to account for all of them. The best insurance you have in a violent confrontation is your training.
Do everything you can to keep the situation from escalating. This should be part of your training, as well.
Keep your cool. You say it's impossible? I say: "practice more".
Know what's legal. You need to plan on this ending in a court case, and having a piece of equipment you are not supposed to have, even if you do not use it, is going to look bad.
If you are not going to kill the bastard, do not use something that could kill him. And remember that a stun charge can aggravate a pre-existing cardiac condition. Weak heart + alcohol or PCP + the jolt from your perfectly legal stun gun, and you're looking at Manslaughter.
Juries think guns and knives are weapons, regardless of their size, shape, or color. If you use either, make damn sure you are on firm legal ground.

Short must have been as paranoid as I used to be, at least according to his relevant random research
Yeah, there's alot of good info out there on the legality of specific weapons. If you were to pick up something, rather than have something in your possession when you're being questioned by the authorities, it would be less suspicious regarding motives or intentions.
If you're in a place like a bar, you have ash trays, glass bottles, bar stools, glasses, etc. Any of those are better than shanking someone with a knife, unless you're fighting another dude with a knife (possibly).
And also be careful about what area you're in-some states are much more laxed about open carry, and well-you try to knife someone who has access to a gun, things will get ugly. There's always consequences for violence, and generally those consist of more violence.
Nobody is going to fight fair, so be a crazier, better, more disciplined, more aware, smarter fighter than the other guy. Use what you have to, but think it through before just pulling that knife out. I don't want to think about what another man will do once he's sure his life is at stake. Also know that a knife doesn't automatically ensure your survival (especially if the dude knows you already have it).
Id say try to find someone who's actually experienced or witnessed a real knife fight. That could really change your outlook.
