I've been meaning to borrow your cuff idea and make my own, but haven't had much luck sourcing any leather locally. Should be headed towards Minneapolis next week, I'll have to try my luck in a bigger city.
There's a Tandy Leather in Bloomington and Roseville. :)
I've just been playing with remnants I find from Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Just search through their bags and you'll find at least one that's worthwhile (ie., not just full of "lace" scraps). I actually got one long enough to make a belt from and about 4 cuts that were at least 9" x 12". :) With coupons, they're pretty affordable. Just keep at it and yeah. Some nice leather can be had. :)

My HL has had the same 2 bags of scraps the last few times I've been there. Looks like mostly lace and a few smaller, odd shaped ones. Bloomington should be easy enough to hit up, we were planning on hitting up the mall of America and IKEA anyway.

"Is it mailed? Did you mail it? Where's the tracking? I'm pretty excited. I hope he cries. Think he'll cry? What a bitch."
"Q is an asshole, but he's so dumb I feel like hugging him all the time."

"I'm waiting for Digiorno to cook. Three meat, stuffed crust. It's not delivery, but no place delivers here. So. "

Despite the username, and avatar, not really my thing. Not saying I didn't partake a time or two in high school (get it? HIGH school)
In all seriousness, my dad has been a cop my whole life, and a DARE officer for a chunk of it. Might look bad if the DARE cops kid got busted for smoking weed. Now alcohol on the other hand...

Cut from the piece of leather some three months ago, but it needs a good oilin'. ;)

I really want to figure this out. I love leather stuff, and half you guys are always making cool shit. I need to start. Is this worth starting with, or would I be better off accumulating a list of decent starting tools and just piecing my own kit together?
And if so, what tools/equipment do I need to start making, say, belts and simple slip sheaths?
Putting aside the actual mini kits in there (wallet, key chain, etc.), since it's on sale I'd pick it up just for the tools and stain, though it's not a huge savings, unless you're really gonna use those stamps and such. I don't really decorate my stuff, so those stamps are useless to me.
But if you plan on making sheaths and whatnot, you'll need more tools like the stitch pattern punching thingie (marks your thread holes), thread/sinew, sewing awl, rivets, rivet setters, snaps, snap setters, bevelers, slick...

Maybe I should piece it together. Of course, Moosh, I have no idea what half those things you mentioned actually are. And when I look at the leather list on Tandy, I have no damn idea what I should be looking for. Or what thread to use, or any basic techniques. I am naked in the dark here.
