This is a kiridashi, made from a billet of Alan Davis. I got this right before he got really busy, so it may be difficult to find this stuff.
I finished the grind, and polished it to 320. It still has to go to HT, but before I did that, I figured I'd give it a vinegar etch, to see what would happen.
I poured in enough to cover it, and figured I'd let it in there for a day or three.
An hour later, I checked it, and was quite pleased to see that it was already very dark. So I let it in there for a while longer, swished it about, flipped it over, and finally decided some pictures were in order.
Photos actually don't do it justice, because the pattern reflects light differently as you move it.
I'll have to do this again when it comes back from HT. But it was very satisfying to see the Damascus pattern come up so well, with just vinegar.
