First one, yes, second one JESUS CHRIST NO. Those pull through sharpeners are made at one specific angle and you will pull every knife through one and the same angle all the time, ruining the bevel... Also the carbide part just EATS metal, removes so much you can see huge steel shavings. Fuck that shit and fuck it to hell, unless you're a housewife there's no excuse to buy a piece of gear as dumb as that

Don't listen to these weirdo people who think sharpening is some rite of passage into knife ownership.
"STONES ARE THE ONLY WAY TO SHARPEN AND ITS A SKILL YOU SHOULD HAVE OR ELSE YOU'RE A STUPID N00B"
knife obsessed.
cardboard for a couple of days of near constant use, and that's the most likely thing someone is likely to cut that'll dull the blade quickly.
LMAO... Im only a weirdo on days that end in "y"
Stones are NOT the only way to sharpen by any means, but it IS a skill every knife enthusiast should learn, A real knife enthusiast should WANT to learn how to hone their blades every way possible. But there are hundreds of ways to skin a cat and not everyone prefers to start with removing the head..
Knife obsessed. Yes. thats me.
Cardboard is mostly cut at home or at the workplace, job dependent. If your only worried about cutting cardboard then use any sharpener you want, youll likely always be home..... But WOOD, VINES, WEEDS, BRUSH.. all dull a blade. If you are in the woods for several days camping.. especially if using a cheaper steel it WILL go dull after hard use. For the people who stay in their homes, or never go out to the woods for more than 1 night then correct you never need to learn anything, heck you could prolly send you knives for professional sharpening a couple times a year and be set. But if your like me and go out in the bush for several days to weeks at a time, chopping and splitting wood, making traps and triggers, building shelters and so on, knowing how to sharpen your blades is essential.
As for the OP, for what you are wanting and asking for id say the crock stick set is a great option, and looks small enough that it would be easy to carry with you in the woods if you needed to. I think the Smith's 2 stone sharpening kit is another fabulous option but since you say your not real into knives the crock stix will be an easier learning method.
Don't listen to these weirdo people who think sharpening is some rite of passage into knife ownership. Croc sticks are perfectly acceptable for any beginner. You can evolve into stones later if you want, but you're always going to hear the "STONES ARE THE ONLY WAY TO SHARPEN AND ITS A SKILL YOU SHOULD HAVE OR ELSE YOU'RE A STUPID N00B" from the knife obsessed. The average person absolutely will never have to worry about dulling their knife up so much in a day that they need it sharpened again before they get back to their kit. Unless you fancy yourself as the type to "bug out" for TEOTWAWKI or you do a lot of camping or have one of those few jobs where you do nothing but cut materials that dull knifes quickly all day every day and nothing else, croc sticks would be perfectly adequate. A half assed blade steel will stand up to cardboard for a couple of days of near constant use, and that's the most likely thing someone is likely to cut that'll dull the blade quickly.
Yes Q O admit I am definately a knife elitist. IMO learning to use stones is a rite of passage. It shows you know a flip about knives. Comparing croc sticks and good stones is like comparing a camaro and ferrari, there is no comparison in the end result. I mean really it is like putting the good diesel in your truck instead of the crappy stuff. If someone doesnt want to use sharpening stones get professional sharpening job or send it off to someone who will do it for you. My name is Grathlong I'm a knife addict.
I started on stones, that's why I recommend them. Dad taught me to use an Arkansas oil stone when I was 5 or 6. Then, he taught me to use the Loray system, which is a forerunner to the Lanksy system, a couple years later. After I learned them, I sharpened both our knives using either way. I guess I am partial because that is how I was taught.
Nobody is comparing croc sticks and good stones. Of course you get a sharper knife from stones and can fix an edge, at the cost of a huge learning curve. You can't compare it to cars, because you don't have to take extra driving classes to drive a ferrari. Why get a professional sharpening job or send it off to someone who will do it when you can get perfectly acceptable results from croc sticks? Sharpening stones don't make you "l337". It just means you put a priority on something that, for all intents and purposes, is a frivolous skill. It's more of a hobby than a real world skill. Some people just want their knife to not be dull. Croc sticks provide that in a cheap, easy, and effective method. The "you're not a REAL knife owner until you use stones!" mentality is stupid and just faux-elitist posturing. Ain't nobody got time for that.
Oh gosh and learning something new is horrible. I was comparing the performance not the skill needed.
For someone not real into knives - what a good entry level sharpening system? Prefer being able to buy local or via Amazon Prime. Would also prefer under 20 bucks.
I know nothing about sharpening knives except that I want to do it and some of mine need it tips and tricks also welcomed.
