With the SB open, it freezes my computer while it refreshed to show a new shout. God forbid there is more than a few people on the SB, because the lag is generally 20-30 seconds per refresh. It can easily take 1+ minutes to post in the SB. It freeze my entire browser so even if I'm on another site it lags.
It has to be a script error and it's gotten worse. With the Netbook it's brutal, but even with my laptop I have lag.

It lags to display the new shout for me too but it takes about a second. Its still annoying. I looked and found one other person complaining about the same thing on their forum. Their solution was to get a new chat client.

The Shoutbox problems probably belong in the Forum Derpness Log.
That being said, I've had SB lag, as well.
Not knowing much about how this shit works won't stop me from making a guess.
We have all kinds of animated avatars, special sig lines, and shit, which is mostly on Proboards' servers. Any time somebody shouts, Proboards has to update that information, and send it out to all the users who are online.
That information may be so widely distributed on Proboards servers, that it takes a noticeable time to refresh, causing the lag.
Wireless appliances, like Netbook, would be correspondingly slower, since the information has to make the journey across an entire separate network that serves only wireless computers.
Honestly, with how the SB dominates this forum i don't see why it isn't more physically dominating the page. If it was wider and longer, say taking up the top 3rd of the page, slow refreshes wouldn't be as annoying because there would be less scrolling involved

not only do we have a lot of them, some are VERY LARGE. this software allows much larger files for avatars than most do. Larger forums limit their avatar sized for a reason imo. shit tons of 1mb animated avatars will bog it down.

It's not a scrolling issue. It's the shoutbox freezing my browser to refresh. It refreshes automatically and when someone types something in the shoutbox there is a 20-30 delay while the shoutbox updates.
20-30 seconds on the netbook 10 on the laptop
I don't think changing the size of the shoutbox will do anything.

Q hosts a lot of stuff on photobucket. I host my avy and stuff on photobucket. The lag would come from slower PCs having to load the images. But mine is fast and their is lag.
