People can get kind of weird when I say I like knives. So by trying to be educated about the subject, and trying to help other people find a knife that fits their needs, I like to think I'm doing my part to stamp out the perception that knives are dangerous weapons.
Knives are tools. What you choose to use them for is what makes the difference. When violence is needed, I use firearms.
As for patience? Heh. Some of the posts on Bladeforums run like this:
"hi what knife do you think I should buy? thanks"
That's the entire post. No mention of what the goofball is looking to pay, or what they intend to use it for, whether fixed or folding...
You actually gave us enough to work with. It was good.

I get asked what car would be good to buy. I usually say that a Porsche is an affordable supercar that won't oil up its plugs around town. Then they tell me what they want to use it for. Funny how a Porsche was rarely on their list. I'm not particularly a fan of Porsches, it just serves to focus their mind.
Nice. There are people who seem to camp out on BF, just to put in a vote for their personal favorite in the "knife suggestion" threads. You get the usual smattering of Spydercos (Ambitious, Tenacious, Persistence, Para-Military), Izula, ZT 0350, then the Chris Reeve guys chime in, and somebody posts a picture of an XM.
Yawn. I doubt that more than one in twenty actually gets an answer they like, because it all just turns into a pissing contest for who can get their opinion in fastest. Even when the OP gives details, there is always some doofus who suggests a knife that is $100 more expensive than the original stated budget, and possibly completely unsuitable for the application.
Like visiting a car dealership, in a way.
The only Porsches I ever liked were the Cayenne, because it's such a contradiction of purposes, and the 356B. For obvious reasons that have nothing to do with James Dean.
Knives are tools. Knives can kill, yes, but they were designed as tools. That was fun convincing the old boss I was going to carry my knife with a no weapon policy at that job. But, he realized what I was saying and then started coming to me when he needed a knife or something cut.
3.5" is about a sweet spot for me. More due to the handle size though. I don't like my pinky or ring fingers hanging off the handle of a knife. Basically all 3.5 inch bladed folders i have had so far have enough grip, SOME 3 inch folders do.
Honestly, an inch of cutting edge would be enough for 99% of what I need on a daily basis. But, knives of that size either have a tiny handle, which my XL hands cant use, or some retarded mismatch of tiny blade on a huge handle.

So it's more of a proportioning thing for you?
aesthetically yes....
well actually, aesthetics are probably my first consideration when i buy a knife. Comfort of the handle in my big hands is second. Blade size just ends up being around 3.5 inches without me trying for it.
I work a desk job, I RARELY ever need a knife for more than opening a package or an envelop or cutting a bit of string. A SAK pioneer would adequately fill my actual NEEDS for an EDC knife. But......i fiddle with my knives a shit ton. I have to say, knives are largely like worry stones for me. I enjoy playing with them. enjoy a smooth pivot, a loud lock, feel of certain materials, shine of certain finishes.......
it doesn't matter how perfect a knife is for EDC, if i don't enjoy playing with it, i wont carry it. on the flip side of that coin, a knife might not be of ideal size or weight, or have the absolute most ergonomic grip, but i if i love playing with it then ill keep it
