Their best-selling stove cartridges are cheaper that the removable ones but since I use it more or less spontaneously I like them better. When I dug it out again some time ago there was an old half-full cartridge which still worked after years.
I'm a big fan of these too, I just got a new one last year.
I use it to boil water for my morning coffee when camping & do the rest of my cooking on a foldable bbq like in the last photo. One of those 240 gram canisters lasts me about 20 to 30 days that way.
Yeah, keeping the weight down seems a constant battle
How much do you usually carry? People keep telling me I shouldn't go much over 20% of my bodyweight, but I'm already there with all my gear and I still need to add food & water too
& do you use hiking poles btw? I don't really see the point of those myself but others keep recommending them to me. I figure I'll just make some if I need to cross a river or have to cross uneven terrain.
Don't think I've ever weighed it...Pretty much if I need it and I can carry it, it goes with me.
I have my pack of course, all my fire starting stuff, usually fishing equipment, first aid pack, .308, my hatchet, my saw, as much water as I can carry cuz I'm a camel and lil snacky foods cuz lots of times I'll catch what I want to eat...that's just a day trip though. Camping is a whole nother story...I can't pack that stuff that's a truck load.
No I've never used poles. I will occasionally take a walking stick ( matter fact I'm making one for Norse right now) I've never really found the "need" I like to use my hands if I'm climbing or sloping... poles would just get in the way. :)I could see if you were crossing a rapid stream but honestly it's all about foot placement.
Do you fish or hunt or just go for the serenity? You seem like you stay out for ages, most of my trips are a weekend or one dayers.
Have you ever had to filter your own water? I have a lifestraw and Norse ( I can't remember the brand) filtration system. I like that idea so I don't have to carry 16 gallons on me. And I've tested the lifestraw at a stream on a hike...works great.
I like to keep my hands free as well, & like I said I can always make one (or two) if I do feel I need something to lean on. Glad I'm not the only one that feels that way then, saves me another 100 bucks for a set of nice trekking poles, haha.
I am working towards a longer stay yes. I recently gave up my apartment and moved back in with my parents to save some extra money. I'm going to quit my job after this winter and try & see how long I can make it out in the woods by myself. My main goal is to get closer to nature & get away from society & all the rules that go with it. It's just something I've always wanted to do & I figured I have dreamed about it long enough now, it's time to find out if I can actually do it. If all goes well I'll probably stay out until winter -as my current gear is mostly 3-season-rated- & then prepare for a stay of one to several years, & if not, well, I'll just be back sooner & have to start over again
I've boiled water & strained it (with a t-shirt) to make it drinkable on short (overnight) trips before and used purification tabs once (it tasted awful!), but I've never done anything like this before. I'm going to buy a Katadyn Pocket filter for this adventure, it seems the most reliable option in terms of durability & build-quality (as long as you don't let it freeze) that's available atm, but it is bloody expensive and a bit on the heavy side.
Hunting isn't allowed in my country and you need a permit in other places in Europe where I usually go camping so my experience is, uhm, secret..? ;) I will do pretty much whatever it takes in an effort to strife in the wilderness though and meat is a pretty important part of my diet, but don't tell anyone please :)
I just wish there was a way to bring a riffle, but that's probably not an option (still considering a powerful .22 air-riffle, but I'm afraid it'll be to suspicious if I get caught with one of those).

First let me say, sir, you are now my new best friend ( with this title comes responsibilities :srsly:)but I digress.............. it's just freakin cool you are going to try and make it on your own.
Water Filters: Back in the day...many many moons ago, there was no need for filters I would literally drink from a stream ...now a days with all the pollution I guess it has become necessary. thus the reason I hate all of mankind...you of course are the exception...see above statement.
Food: I had an uncle that moved out to the woods to see if he could live off the land...he lasted about a year. Staples.... and income to acquire said staples, turns out were his biggest obstacles. Have you thought about things like salt, oil and other "omg I'd die if I couldn't have that" everyday necessities? Man can "live" w/o those things however, you shouldn't. You're body actually needs salt and fat to survive...I only bring it up because you say hunting is "illegal"
Hunting: I'm sure you have thought about all of this it's just in my nature to be curious ....How will you manage? Bow's? trapping? fishing? Gathering of roots and berries? Tell me man I'm dying here >...personally in your case anyway...maybe fishing and trapping would be best if you are going to be near authorities( sorry I don't know your laws...hell I barely know my own). The only thing I have ever trapped is bait...so no idea how hard that is.
Laws: eeehhh they are just like rules "made to be broken" >:Pbut if anyone asks I didn't say that ...I am a law abiding citizen....when it suits me :herpderp:
Communication: I totally get "gettin away" however, will you have any form of communication? Family, friends, emergency services? Also and more importantly.........ME!!! I would love to read about how you are doing ...what's goin on, pictures, editorials, blogs etc.... idc how but as per the statement above...you now have responsibilities.
I like to mix up lite and is that a wok?!?

Love your gear Snap, that lil stabilizer for your stove...I want one!! guess I need the stove first anywho...awesome coffee pot..looks very technical ;)
Thanks and not too technical, though I do have a spreadsheet totaling weights down to the gram. So far I'm down to a 13lbs base weight with my Big 4 at 8lbs and that's with a few luxuries
Yeah the coffee maker was three decades of trial and error and carrying pots in 60lbs packs when I was 12. That dripper is .18 oz and has been used on a daily basic for the last 3 years. Not too shaby for $20 with shipping. And I love my coffee
Re. Pollution in streams, I was up on the moors once, dabbling my hand in the river, walked a little further upstream and found half a dead sheep in the water. Yummy! I was glad I hadn't drunk any.

You think that's bad...The White River ( Nationally know for fly fishing and the clearest waters in the south) somehow ...(I'll keep my opinions to myself for fear of offending anyone) the river is now polluted with some form of algae that can only be man born ...so our beautiful clear river is now encompassed with white "wet toilet paper" like algae ...seriously I mean what the french >:OI'd take a dead animal any day...ok ok that's nasty but you know what I'm sayin :-/nice puke emote btw...very believable

Oh dear, I'm terrible at maintaining friendships, are you sure about this..?
I think the surface water in Sweden (where I will be going) is fairly save to drink, but I feel safer using a filtration system anyway when I'm a couple of days away from help. That way I can also use standing water if I have trouble finding a lake or stream. These filters don't deal with chemical pollution though, you need some kind of osmoses system to clean that up & those are expensive & not portable as far as I know. Distillation might be an option too, but it's a bit hard to do properly in the wild. Although, if those bootleggers can do it..?
That's pretty cool what your uncle did, was he still in good health after that year? Idk what you mean with 'staples' though, enlighten me please? I only know of staples used to keep paper together and the store-chain, but I don't think you're revering to those.
I will bring salt, sugar & some spices as well as my fav instant coffee and food for about a week, but when I run out I'll just have to go back to civilization and replace it. I don't really need oil the way I usually cook, but I will bring some mineral oil to care for my knives & other tools.
I'm a pretty decent archer, but I'm not bringing a bow so my success with this will mostly rely on my bow & arrow making skills. Luckily I will have plenty of time to practice those. I may bring a piece of PVC-pipe as I made my most accurate bows with those, but that kinda feels like cheating a bit so I'm not sure yet. I will bring arrowheads though. Besides that I just need a knife and some rope to make fishing traps as well as deadbolt traps for small game. I'll bring some snare-wire as well but to be honest I'm not a big fan of those. I feel the animal suffers to much if they're in there for too long & I rather choose my own prey, so that will be a last resort only. I'll also bring a slingshot but I'm not really accurate with it yet so I need some more practice before I'll target living creatures with it. & I'll probably modify it so it'll shots arrows too. Besides that I've been studying wild-edibles in Europe for a few years now & I plan to go out with a guide to learn more about some of the local indigenous species as well before I head deep in to the woods so I should be good with my greenery & whatnot.
Besides a GPS I'll also bring my tablet which doubles as a mobile phone/library/entertainment system, but I don't expect any coverage where I'll be so I can only communicate if I go back to civilization for grocery runs. This means I have no plans for a blog or anything like that, so basically no news is good news I'm still looking for a solar charger to keep these electronics & my flashlights working & think I'm gonna go with a Powermonkey Extreme.
I think that about covers it?
Oh, I ordered that Solo Stove & pot comb today btw, but it'll probably take a few weeks to get here.

Great stuff
Cool to see someone has the First Need filter on here. I came across it when I was researching filters & it was my first choice for a while as it's pretty much the only filter that filters out the smaller viruses too. But it's hard to get over here & I was a little worried about durability so I decided to go with the Katadyn Pocket instead & perhaps a small UV light to deal with the viruses (or just boil it when in doubt).
I like that pocket shower too, how much does it weigh & how would you rate it for durability? I can wash up with my pressurized water bladder too, but it only produces a meager stream & I'll have to filter the water first if I use it because it's also a drink-water-container.

Thanks
It took years to find a filter that removed everything without 2 step processes and the First Need was the final choice and after watching a video on Youtube where a guy did a backwash to clean it out and what looked like a brine shrimp came out. He said in the video that it must have been growing INSIDE the filter for 2 weeks, and that sold me. Heavy as shit but I can carry less water with me at a time if I know there's sources ahead.
The shower is better describe by the website:
The newest addition to the Sea to Summit Pocket series - the Pocket Shower is made of the same high quality, wear-resistant, waterproof fabric as our Lightweight Dry Sacks and features the same roll-top closure. Built into the base is a compact showerhead that operates with an easy-to-use on/off twist mechanism. The twist spout also serves to adjust the flow of water, delivering an efficient trickle to a free-flowing shower. Fill the 10 Liter (2.6 gallon) Pocket Shower, roll it to close at the top and hang it from two tough Delrin™ D rings with the 20 feet of lightweight cord provided. The black fabric soaks up sun during the day at basecamp for a warm shower or fill it at the end of the day for a cool rinse. •Super compact and light: zips into a pouch that measures only 3" x 6" and weighs just 4.25 ounces •Gives about an 8 and a half minute shower with shower head fully open •Contoured shower head with graduated apertures for equal spray dispersion •Simple and easy-to-use twist mechanism for turning on/off and for flow adjustment •Bar tack attached Delrin™ D rings •20 foot cord included •For multi-function, the Pocket Shower can also be used as a regular dry sack to transport clothes or sleeping bag
Now for durability... this thing rocks! I've had it for a few years but it's seen hundreds of trips. I usually pack it in the car whenever I go, just in case, and it does make a great dry bag.
