This may be sacrilege, but if I'm perfectly honest I probably don't even need to carry a dedicated knife. Something similar to a SAK rambler on my keys and I'd be set. That being said I looove me some gear.

Tuts my barreh, I juss wanna mek yu fill like yu never dee
Lotta truth in thread posts here, and I'm just as guilty starting out with a Gerber or slippie that was just fine for the longest time until I discovered knifecenter online and then bladeforums and then edcf and then usn.
I still think every one of the knives in my collection is worthy of holding on to for some ungodly hoarder reason, but as I make those tough decisions to let them go, it just puts me closer to pulling the trigger on the next custom that catches my eye, and I don't have to wonder where the money is coming from. USN is basically to blame for my new custom desires as I never knew how easy it was to contact and discuss the items I really like with the folks who actually make them.
Glad USN don't like my IP then or I would be screwed. But, I am curious to see what all the hype is about. I guess I'll have to find an email address I have that works.

I don't know if USN has a lot of hype. It's an EDC forum with very expensive gear (generally). It is nice to be able to talk to certain manufacturers.
It is very restrictive unless you are a paying member. There are a lot of superfans, but that's to be expected considering the makers are there.
It can be hard to distinguish who is a douche or not based on gear. You'd assume they are douches because of the gear, but in my very limited experience they are very nice.
Navigation is terrible and the toxic green and black is hard on the eyes.
...
All that said, for me I think I've reached the end of my knife goals. I tried for a couple years to find the grail. Frankly though I think MW is right. The chase is better. With my first Alan Davis I thought I was set. Months went by and I still found myself looking. I built the perfect knife for me, and still there is something missing. Realizing this, I've decided to abandon the custom knife hunt. The price always makes me feel dirty (especially with mid-techs) and I've realized I still like to hunt.
So my custom days are finished. Now I'm going to whore myself out with production variants and tinker with those.

I want to try out a knife before I commit. Like, get one of the chinese knock-offs of a Hinderer or Strider to see if they would be a knife I was willing to throw $500+ at. Tried the SRM 710 for the reason it was supposedly a CRK knockoff. Nice knife, but not one I would pay $300+ for an original. Wife adopted it and loves it. May buy her a real one for her birthday or anniversary. Actually bought two so I could abuse one and have a spare. She stole one.
The issue here is the psychological concept Paradox of Choice. The more choices you have the more unsatisfied you are to be with anything, regardless of how utilitarian it is in its function or how aesthetically pleasing it is in its form. The very fact that you imagine that there could possibly be something better out there, in and of itself, means you will not be satisfied.
For example, when you could buy a Ford in any color you wanted so long as it was black, people thought nothing of the color and were happy. Now that the entire rainbow is available, you get buyer's remorse.
Worst of all, knowing that this is happening in the recesses of your mind will not prevent it. It is just the way we are wired.
Anyway, I highly recommend the book I linked to, but if you want it quick, fast, and dirty...
