Very brief background, I was hunting for the perfect knife. Tried production and then custom and I still feel...that I will never have the perfect knife. I think it's the man biology in me that craves variety.
How do you feel about it? Do you think if you didn't know about EDC and just found a knife in the store you would be good? Does the variety of pics and styles and designs make you crave for something different?

I don't think I will ever be fully satisfied based on what knives I have had so far. Its possible that if I venture into full custom that I will encounter a knife that's design is fully satisfying. Unfortunatly the price tag of 400 plus bucks is reason enough to be unsatisfied. Sort of a catch 22. The only level of fit and finish/qaulity that I have encountered so far, that is fully satisfying is my sebenza. Yet the design still leaves something to be desired, and the cost leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. So still its not satisying. The strider has a cooler design in my opinion but its still not ergonomic, and the maker/customer service leave something to be desired. Not to mention fit and finish is not what I would expect from almost 500 dollars for a knife.
The edc comunity and forums has absolutley shaped my expectations, unfortunately. Before I found gear/knife forums I caried a griptilian and I felt like it was an exquisite knife. I had no idea what was out there. Once I got my hands on some better stuff it was all over. I won't even carry that grip anymore, and nothing is satisfying now. It would absolutley have been easier for me, had I remained ignorant to the vast plethora of options out there. I'd still be carrying the grip or an endura and be pretty satisfied.

I'm having some "clean house thoughts". Complete dump of expensive gear and getting back to fundamentals. I think my knife addiction has gotten carried away. I used a Gerber Obsidian for a year or two. No real issues. Suited my needs. Then I bought a real knife a Spyderco Persistence. That's when it started. I started getting more and more picky. Hunting for the blonde then wanting a brunette.

The chase is better than the catch. I probably was more excited when I got my Tenacious than when I got one of my 150$+ knives... Hopefully one day I can stop and not end up as a Chris Reeve/Strider/Hinderer fanboy.
Well I certainly won't buy a Hinderer ever, fuck those figures.
The idea has occurred to me, that were I to avoid gear forums, I might better learn to be satisfied with what I have. Instead of being driven to keep buying new knives at all times. I certainly was more satisfied with much less before I discovered EDCF roughly a year ago. Logging into multiple gear forums every day keeps my eyes full of things I want and cant afford. Food for thought.
I consider myself a knife collector even though I only have 2 knives that are worthy of collecting. I think the main part is being honest with yourself about want vs need and the motivations behind your wanting something. Would I like to own a sebbie someday? Sure. Do I need one? Absolutely not. No one NEEDS an expensive knife. Even those for whom the knife might be the difference between life and death can find something got under $100 that will reliably do the job. Usually way under 100.
But I don't beat myself up over my purchases. I just make sure i'm not spending my rent on things I don't need.
Before i got my first benchmade nearly 10 years ago, I carried a CRKT m16 tanto for a few years, bought it when I was 18. i wasn't aware of what was out there, wasn't familiar with "lock rock" and "fit and finish" or different types of blade steels.
i beat the living shit out of that knife. it was hideous. it had horrible blade play in every direction imaginable and some that aren't. It had buttery soft AUS 8 that rusted somewhat easily. i kept a horrible edge on it, used it like a throwing knife, chipped the edge and the tip, put it to a grinder to remove the chips and got it too hot, burning the edge and probably messing up the heat treat. broke pieces off the zytel handles. I used it and i didn't care. it never "failed" really, or closed when i was using it. never really broke. And i didn't care, didn't pass a thought about it, it was just in my pocket for whenever.
Things were so much simpler when i didn't spend time on the internet

Yeah before I was into knives I just had the saks and a kershaw. Than it just exploded, I love pretty much all of my knives I have kept but shake my head when I think about all the money sitting there in knives and other gadgets. I have been carrying my tad dauntless exclusively except for my little frikkie today also. The deep carry pocket clip, finger choil, blackwash. everything about the knife is awesome in my eyes its hard to want to carry something else. I really have fallen for that knife, before it was my superblue caly3 that fitted me prefect now it has changed to the dauntless.
Did you check out my new Wilder Knife? I'd say it's pretty close to perfect
But yeah, I hear ya. It's like that with everything ime, it seems I'm always more or less compromising with everything I get anyway. No perfect car, no perfect bike, not even a perfect laptop & no goddamn perfect woman neither.
I think we have to make it ourselves if we want the perfect whatever we're talking about. If only I had the perfect skills to do so.. :(
