Kertap, loved the description of your area. It sounds like the plot of a video game! That is interesting geography, man! Maybe you need a hazmat suit and inflatable boat in your car. Seriously, thanks for posting.

Yeah, where I live is okay but I work a few hundred yards from Niagara Falls. The river takes a hard right turn at the falls do it blocks travel in two directions. There is a bridge to Canada, but I don't have a passport. Last dune there was a minor spill that happened just after I went through on my way home. To detour around it would have added half an hour to my twenty minute drive home. A major spill would block travel completely, the Niagara peninsula just isn't that wide.
Especially if you work in an office environment, you should have something to change into so you don't scrape your loafers up, scrambling over rocks. A full outfit, including shirt and pants is a good idea, and some extra socks.
Maps.
Energy bars or trail mix.
If you leave the office and find that things have gone Heisenberg, you may have several hours of walking to do. In which case, that can of soup you consumed for lunch, and the donut you stole around 3, are not going to fuel your hike.
I guess I really need to get serious about building an oh schiznit bag. I would like a Jack sack type of bag if I could find one that is built good. I just think the big ol bad azz tactical pack is the answer you know?
The list has good ideas. The bigger pry bar is a bit odd. I could see its use in a more urban environment, but not in a rural one. I am on the very outskirts of the city so I could be outside the city in 15 minutes.
I agree with other communication than the cell phone or walkie talkie. I am a amateur radio operator, HAM in other words, and have a registered with the city for local emergencies. Never know when something will happen. We had a pretty good grass fire last summer that part of the town got evacuated for. Out neighborhood was next so I had my radio on and was monitoring all the action. On a side note, you know how cool it is to watch and water bomber and his spotter plane fly over head and drop retardant?

I have a Camelbak Urban Assault XL for my school bag in it I have the basic college level stuff But I also keep some other things in it JUST IN CASE. -for a while I carried a full-sized MT, but since wearing a Wave on my hip at all times, I dont see the need for the added weight, so its gone. -I keep a roll of electrical tape in there - i love this stuff, super handy! -always keep a washcloth/handtowel in it (usually more than one) - i get sweaty, or if its raining etc, good to dry off with. useful if needed for a filter in fire/smoke area.
I have a case for the face of a cd player (you know, the detachable ones, the little case to put it in), Pioneer. In it I have some zipties, sharpie, earplugs, nail clippers, toothbrush, and couple little odds and ends that I cant recall right now.
what i DONT have that i really need to pop in there is a small FAK
and on me: the before mentioned Wave Leatherman Brewzer Fenix E05
pretty minimal, but I figure itd get me out of a few small issues I might face in normal life. I dont really expect anything wild to go down, and hope Im not surprised.

also - i keep a little extra cash in my bag, comes in handy. just today i wanted a beverage (skipped breakfast and am no longer in teh building beside of the bojangles ) only had a 1, 5, and 20. Drink was 2 bucks. luckily i keep a little change in my bag - bought my starbucks caramel beverage. was delicious. lasted through my history class and lunch :)
AND also I keep a SS waterbottle in the bag in one side pocket and compact umbrella in the other pocket
So tech and spec ops brand and several others make base belts that you could build a hellafine Bat Belt, mate that bugger to a combat bandoleer(tad gear knock off) poncho villa style and you'd have it Goin on yo!

General out loud thinking. Just got a pair of swimming goggles. Actually for swimming but will do double duty in my GHB. so thinking about a small bag but one that'll fit the gear. A decent pair of shoes will take a large volume, so I'll try strapping them to outside of the bag. But as I'm a 'bag' person they'll need to be in their own bag! Also sourcing mask... Going to use the paper ones or the builders ones. I use pencil cases for small bags cos they're cheap, if on the long side .
The grid-it works out well for organizing these things-at the very least keeping them flat and off the bottom of the bag.
They're all in one place so you can quickly retrieve everything without scrambling-especially nice just in case you need to tell someone else where to get the item you're describing.
So here's what I've got: -2 emergency thermal sleeping bags -thermal blanket -rain ponchos -feminine pad (gf emergencies)
-elastic bandage -gauze pad -cotton tip applicators -med capsule with antihistamines and ibuprofen -bandages -burn gel -alcohol wipes -triple antibiotic ointment -sterile gloves
