Okay. So my scenario is not one born of zombies or apocalyptic fear. No real violence due to complete societal breakdown or anything like that. Mostly this is a relatively confined local outage or incident. Maybe a large weather event just in my area that forces me to leave my home or immediate surroundings.
Well, in that case which I think would precede any larger events, I would like a bag that will keep me covered, protected, and at least fed for about a week.
This is my bag of choice (for now). A Yukon Tactical bug-out bag.
Top pocket - probably put gun there Zip-up dividers inside - just cool feature Plenty of space (I think) for my needs Hideaway shoulder straps for backpack-ability - Love that feature Adjustable clippable retention straps on both sides - thinking small tent one side and sleeping bag on the other?
MREs or camping meals? (camping meals require boiling water and have 5000% of daily sodium intake per meal) Clothes of course Gun Tent Sleeping bag Put an OP1 type pouch with medical supplies on the molle webbing on one end? Glow sticks LifeStraw personal water filter Becker BK9? Bic lighters
(Will edit to add more)

Very reasonable. I think this makes more sense than like doomsday prep people.
I like how much organization this bag has.

This may sound really cheesy, but a carton of Cigarettes and some instant coffee. They can go a long way if you had to bargain with someone or create a positive first impression.

And what do I do after the first full day when all that is gone and the nic and caffeine fits start to give me the shakes?

I am of the same mindset as you, it seems (scary, I know!) I dont expect anything crazy to happen, but I realize things do happen. I first put together a similar bag (GHB, Get Home Bag) about two years ago when I had to go to work and they were calling for snow. This was just after seeing on the news where people in ATL were stuck on the highway for 18 hours because of snow. So my idea was to build something that would keep me comfortable for 24 hours in the event that I got in that situation.
I recently posted (re-posted?) my LBT bag pics in the bag thread. I will get around (Saturday?) to taking pics of stuff in it (as well as shipping out Tills package).
MREs, to me, are excellent. They dont taste that bad and have so much with them in a fairly small package. And if you view youtube there are ways of making them smaller. And they'll run you about 6 bucks a pop (less if you buy a whole case!).
I'd say that when youre thinking of your pack to consider a few things: how long do you expect to need it? What would you ACTUALLY need, as you dont want a 50lb pack thats a beast to carry Where are you going and when, change things with the seasons - a smaller/lighter sleeping bag in the summer (or none at all) will help cut down on bulk and weight etc
Jesus. How many steps and parts will it take to get some potable water? Is the user's manual the size of an encyclopedia?
You're a fucking moron. It does exactly the same thing as the life straw only filters more, has some add ons so you don't have to stick your stoppy fucking face in the river to suck from it oh and BTW, it's called Sawyer as in Tom Sawyer as in Tom's Choice as in TC as in EAD!

Jim, opinions on specific items vary from person to person, so some of this you will simply have to decide for yourself. The best we can do, I think, is let you know what we do and why, then you can take what makes sense and jettison what doesn't. Your particular situation is as unique as you are. By necessity, this means your bag will be unique too.
As it happens, I just posted a vid about my GHB. If you decide to watch it, just bare in mind that it is a supplement to my EDC bag which is itself centered on major trauma and survival gear. There is a vid on that too, but I won't clutter your thread up with a bunch of my stuff as the EDC bag is easily found.
As for your food choice, MREs are fine unless you plan on traveling on foot. At that point, a weeks worth of MRE's and the associated weight won't seem like a smart idea. In fact, neither will that BK-9. If there is any potential that the bag is going to have to be carried, even if the chances of needing to carry it are very small, you're bester off taking weight into consideration from the jump.
