Traveling by plane or just going to an amusement park can mean all pointy sharp objects that we love are verboten. I am searching for ideas on items you can carry that will pass a sniff test yet can still be used as tools when you need them. I did pick up a Leatherman Style CS that is said to be TSA approved (but they can use discretion)
Some people have suggested key knives.
I have heard people thinking like Macgyver and bringing a CD and duct tape to use as a crude makeshift knife. (snap the CD in half and use the tape to wrap one side)
I do know people seem to gloss over my paracord bracelet. One idea I came up with, was to put a mini dog tag on the bracelet and pre-score it on a diagonal. When / if you need it, you take the tag off, bend it back and forth until it snaps and then use the jagged edge as a knife. I did test this idea out with some success.
Does anyone have other ideas of items that can be useful but won't get confiscated?
I thought about the razor and credit card tools. The razor seems like if your caught it would be deemed more serious and I have seen some credit card tools confiscated (why I don't know).
The last time I flew was from Philly to Orlando. We were going to Disney, and I simply packed my knife in my checked bag. No fucks were given. When we got there, I put it in my pocket, instead of clipping it like I usually do. Went two weeks without a single problem, and packed it in the checked bag for the return trip.
If I was traveling with only a carry-on, I would get a small Pelican hard case, and a combination lock. Stow the knife in there, and lock it.
I like to carry a knife for overcompensating reasons, but if you think about it realistically, there is no EDC task that cannot be accomplished by a small pair of scissors and a small wire cutting tool for things like zip ties. In a pinch, that combination could stand in place of a knife.
That was my thought with the Style CS - scissors and wire cutter. I too went to disney - I had a SAK in my checked bag and kept it in my pocket while in the park. No issues. When I traveled back from Boston with only carry on, the TSA agent was overly cautious and needed to check my wife's laptop and my liquids bag. The soda can they gave me in mid flight is more of a weapon then anything I brought with me.
