This started three years ago, when I tried to cut something at work, and the lockbar of my framelock knife tried to un-lock on me.
It was my fault for trying to cut 1/2" thick conveyor skirting with a semi-sharp knife, but it got me thinking about what I would want in a folding knife for use at work.
So, I got permission from Andrew Demko to use his Demko lock, with the provision that I have no intention to sell it.
And, it's going to be a big, ugly, sharpened prybar of questionable appeal to others.
I also got some CPM S30V, which is one of the best balances between toughness and wear resistance in a stainless steel, available today.
After a while of telling myself that I should get some shit done on this project, I realized two things:
1) I was too worried about making it perfect
2) I was scared that I would fuck it up.
So I decided to kick myself out of this, by saying "fuck it", and just grinding some metal.
I decided to start with the handle slabs, so I'll use this one to make a duplicate.
I still have lots of things I can fuck up: I have to locate and drill holes, especially the pivot hole.
The Demko lock is especially easy to make a mess of, because it has a stop pin in an awkward place, so I'll post some more photos whenever I feel like it, to document the impending fail.
This was the other reason I ducked this project for so long.
Framelocks are easy to move pieces around, because the lock gets out of the way of the pivoting blade. So, you can change pivot pin sizes and other stuff without worrying about moving parts bumping into each other.
This mess is because there are two fixed pins with a blade running in a circle around one, and having to stay out of the way of the other.
So, I drew the one on the bottom, and found that I had... clearance problems.
After some more mental sweat, I figured out that I had to draw some circles around the pivot and stop pins, and then put the blade in between them in such a way so that it didn't hit the stop pin.
I don't make promises, but we'll see. Some of that depends on whether or not my job still exists.
Before you get too excited, remember that I'm using quarter inch stock for this brick, so the total thickness of the knife, with handle slabs, will be three quarters of an inch, plus whatever I decide to use for scales.

You're making me like it even more. Looking forward to the rest of the WIP
I wasn't going to post these, but if it will give Willydigger something else to whine about.

I tried to grind the bark off with files, but I realized that I would need some help from my father (and his milling machine) to get them truly flat and clean.
So, after mucking about with a fly cutter for some while, he decided that a depressed-center grinding wheel was the way to go.
It did a beauty, but it dumped a lot of heat into the steel. I'm going to start with 220, and probably have to waste half an hour by switching to 150, then going back to 220.
I haven't wrecked anything beyond repair, just yet, but I haven't drilled any holes.

I was burning a lot of effort trying to clean the narrow sides of the slabs, because I was scared.
Pivot hole will be 7/32", but I don't have a 7/32" bit.
Yet.
So I'm going to drill it at 3/16", to give the punch shaft clearance, then I'll use this as the pattern to punch the second slab.
That's the plan.
I'll be back in about an hour with pictures of an over-sized and off-center hole, my bloody, scraped-up knuckles, and a dent in something solid that matches my fist....
